London Games Festival 2007 - Now Closed.

We are running a series of events called: Heroes, Movie Stars & Millionaires dedicated to games and machinima.

__________ALL EVENTS SCHEDULED________________

25th October: 10am – 1pm: Design Rules! Creating Compelling Emotive Games workshop lead by Ernest Adams - design veteran and co-founder of IGDA and leading international games industry tutor. Half-day highly interactive group workshop. £99 + vat.

Where: 76 Portland Place, London W1

Why: Attending this workshop will teach you, through group working, how to design compelling games – the ones that really grab you! It is open to all who have a love for games whatever their background or professional interest. Learn how to embed essential compelling techniques into your games. Come away with some new creative IP ideas.

More: A successful game is one that enthrals, making a connection at an emotional level with the player. Not only does this make the game experience more rewarding and the game itself sell more (and lead to franchises) but these techniques are in demand across many interactive media from learning to advertising and brands.

This workshop is team-based to create a scaled-down version of a professional design environment. The team members will take on different roles: lead designer, art director, and so on. Each person receives a worksheet designed specifically for his or her role. Teams will be chosen by lottery, so it's perfectly OK to come by yourself. Each team will get a different game idea in a sealed envelope. Each idea is unique and is something that has never been developed commercially. The worksheets guide the teams through the process and help them to document their thinking. There are no pre-requisites.

25th October: 2 – 5pm: It’s Showtime – with Machinima ..1/2 day of tutorials, show-cases and Q&A.

Leading the sessions are:

  • Ricard Gras (LA Interactiva, the leading film-maker in Second Life)
  • Matt Kelland (Moviestorm, engine developer and visionary on distribution models)
  • Chris Carella (Electric Sheep, world's largest designer for virtual worlds)
  • Dr Tracy Harwood (the force behind the Machinima Festival Europe)

They are all itching to showcase film segments and show the techniques used to develop them; advise as to the best games engine and platform for creating your film across Second Life and others; advise as to how to make money and get work as a designer in virtual worlds; debate the emerging business model, including the impact of recent tightening of IP issues associated with using Microsoft engines – and provide the inside track on what judges look for when making awards.

£99 + vat.

Where: 76 Portland Place, London W1

Why: Attend this seminar to learn about the current state-of-the-art of Machinima - see exciting films segments, learn techniques and learn how you can make capital from your creative talents in an industry that's growing up and so is presenting more opportunity. You will network with and learn from the leading film-makers in the UK.

The signs are that Machinima has moved beyond hobbyist to professional status with a new business model that rewards both creatives and new engine and distribution providers. Wiley has just published a Machinima for Dummies book whilst Microsoft has just spelt out the legal issues of using their engines for machinima and this has closed down some projects. This change has opened up more opportunities for some of the little guys from creative through to distribution (with a similar business model to MMOs like WoW and Second Life.) What does the future hold?

More: Ricard Gras of LA Interactiva creates magnificent machinima films in Second Life; Matt Kelland (Moviestorm, engine developer and visionary on distribution models) providing an in-depth tutorial; Chris Carella talking about how they have built their skills into a truly viable creative business plus Dr Tracy Harwood, the organizer of the European Machinima Festival alerting you to what the judges are looking for when making their choices for awards.
